Published in 1881 under the title Selbstmord als sociale Massenerscheinung der modernen Civilization the work is based on Masaryk's second thesis, submitted to the University of Vienna in November 1878. The book has been rightly regarded as the key to Masaryk's philosophical personality. The suicidal tendency, as Masaryk saw it, was one of the symptoms of the disintegration of the old unified world-view represented by Catholicism before its spiritual supremacy had been undermined by rationalism and individualism. To restore the lost purpose of life, modern men need a new faith. Where can this new faith be found? The teaching of Jesus with its practical humanism but without the anachronistic mythology, was Masaryk's answer to the question. Masaryk accorded this early work a great importance among his writings, declaring toward the end of his life: "Today I could say it better, but in essence I could not add anything." · XIV, 245 S.
